All About Developmental Screening

Developmental screenings closely examine how well your child is developing. The doctor recommends this screening whenever you or your doctor are concerned about your child's growth and development. Your doctor may start incorporating this screening at nine months at each wellness visit, even if the child shows no concerns.

Our doctors may want to complete a developmental screening at each milestone visit. Ask your doctor questions such as,

  • Does my child's language skills meet their milestone? Do I have any worries?
  • Are my child's gross and fine motor skills developing OK or need therapy or rehabilitation help?
  • My child is antisocial.
  • Are there delays in movement?
  • Is communication OK?

Initially, we may give your child a quick test. We may ask you to complete a questionnaire about how you think your child is growing. These tests are helpful tools to explain your child's ability and skill toward language, movement, thinking, social criteria, behavior, and emotions. Children with specific criteria like these may be at higher risk for developmental issues.

  • Preterm Birth
  • Low Birthweight
  • Environmental Risks
  • Chronic Health Diagnosis
  • Long-Lasting Health Concern

You can find a helpful link to your child's milestone information if you access the CDC guidelines for childhood milestones and meet specific developmental criteria at each milestone. These milestones are particular stages of typical growth. We realize that no child develops or learns at the same rate, and all children mark their own pace. However most children pass through these milestones at about the same time, but if your child is not meeting these milestones, you must speak to your doctor.

Our doctors have many resources to help you and your child and can refer you to the resources helpful for your situation.
